Kanteerava Studio Road repairs have been ordered urgently after a deep crater opened on the damaged stretch between Surana College and Nandini Layout in west Bengaluru, prompting Greater Bengaluru Authority chief commissioner Maheshwar Rao to direct officials to restore the carriageway promptly.
Rao issued the instructions during an inspection of several locations in west Bengaluru on Thursday. He reviewed the condition of the pothole-ridden road, which has faced repeated complaints from local residents and commuters, and directed engineers to accelerate pothole-filling and repair the remaining damaged portions at the earliest.
According to BBMP officials, pothole-filling work had already started on one side of the road when the inspection took place. Engineers told the chief commissioner that, subject to weather conditions, work on the remaining portion would be taken up at night. The road had drawn public attention after heavy rain led to the emergence of the deep crater.
The inspection also covered the proposed Jalahalli Cross underpass, which is intended to ease traffic congestion in the area. Officials informed Rao that 48 properties are required for the project. Of these, 22 have been acquired, leaving 26 properties still to be acquired before the main construction work can proceed.
Rao directed officials to speed up acquisition of the remaining properties and begin construction at the earliest. He also instructed them to build a service road on land that has already been acquired. The temporary or supporting route is intended to facilitate traffic movement before the underpass construction begins.
The commissioner further directed officials to fast-track the planned white-topping of a 2.5-km stretch from NTTF through Sonal Garments to TVS Cross Junction. Officials were told that the work should begin soon after ongoing Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board pipeline-laying activities are completed.
White-topping is also being planned on a road network that is being affected by other underground utility work, making the sequencing of pipeline installation and surface improvement an immediate implementation issue. The instructions place the road repairs, utility work and longer-term corridor improvement within the same inspection programme, although the source report does not specify a final completion date for the projects.
During the inspection, Rao also ordered the removal of waste dumped along roadsides in Peenya Industrial Area. Officials were directed to take measures to prevent fresh dumping at the location, adding roadside sanitation and enforcement to the list of civic actions reviewed during the visit.
The immediate repair of Kanteerava Studio Road will depend on weather conditions and the progress of the instructed works. The next stated steps are night-time repairs on the remaining damaged section, acquisition of the 26 outstanding properties for the Jalahalli Cross underpass, construction of the service road on acquired land and commencement of white-topping after BWSSB pipeline work is completed.
