UP GRP Modernisation Gets ₹1 Crore Tech Boost for Rail Safety

UP GRP modernisation with railway police using surveillance and safety equipment at an Indian station

The Uttar Pradesh government has sanctioned ₹1 crore for modern equipment for the Government Railway Police (GRP) during 2026-27, with drones, body-worn cameras, metal detectors and public-address equipment planned for deployment at railway stations and on trains across the state.

The investment is intended to strengthen frontline policing, improve emergency response and support crowd management for railway passengers. The equipment will be procured by the UP police headquarters and GRP headquarters in Lucknow, with the process required to follow financial and procurement rules.

The planned procurement includes five drone sets, 326 body-worn cameras, 301 Bluetooth speakers, 121 handheld loudhailers, 120 metal detectors and two smart card and hologram-making machines. The largest allocation within the equipment plan is for body-worn cameras, which officials said are expected to improve transparency during police-public interactions.

Drones are intended to help the GRP monitor large crowds during festivals, holiday rushes and special events. The equipment could allow personnel to observe crowd movement and identify potential security concerns across busy station areas, according to the report. The procurement plan does not specify the individual stations where the drones will be deployed.

The metal detectors will be used to strengthen security screening and help police identify prohibited or suspicious objects before they enter station premises. Bluetooth speakers and handheld loudhailers are expected to improve communication with passengers during routine operations, emergencies and periods of heavy congestion.

The announcement comes as railway stations remain critical public spaces where large numbers of passengers converge in confined areas, particularly during festivals and holiday travel periods. For the GRP, which is responsible for policing railway premises and trains in the state, the technology package is aimed at supplementing frontline personnel with surveillance, communication and screening tools.

The procurement also includes two smart card and hologram-making machines. The report does not provide further details on their intended operational use or identify the locations where they will be installed.

The technology purchase forms part of a broader effort to modernise railway policing in Uttar Pradesh. The government has directed the UP police headquarters and the GRP headquarters in Lucknow to complete procurement by March 31, 2027, in accordance with applicable financial and procurement procedures.
