Delhi Schools Shift Online as Protest Threatens Metro Travel

Delhi schools revise schedules amid a Jantar Mantar protest and expected Metro restrictions

Delhi schools and colleges have revised classes, examinations and parent-teacher meetings scheduled for October 10 after a protest at Jantar Mantar prompted security concerns and expectations of Metro restrictions in central parts of the city. The changes include online teaching, postponed examinations and cancelled campus activities.

Sardar Patel Vidyalaya in Lodhi Estate informed parents that Classes VI to XII would attend classes online on Saturday. The school cited extensive barricading in the New Delhi area and concerns over student safety. It also suspended its Friday stay-back facility and postponed the inauguration of Activity Week, which had been planned for Saturday.

Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan’s Mehta Vidyalaya on Kasturba Gandhi Marg also altered its schedule. Sports Day practice and enrichment classes planned for students of Classes IX to XII on Saturday were cancelled. The changes affect activities as well as regular movement to and from campuses located in central Delhi, where access restrictions were expected around the protest site and surrounding areas.

Raghubir Singh Junior Modern School in central Delhi postponed its parent-teacher meeting. Report cards were due to be discussed during the meeting, and the school said a revised schedule would be announced later. The decision means that the meeting will be rescheduled rather than shifted online, according to the report.

Colleges changed examination dates after anticipating disruption to public transport. Bharati Vidyapeeth’s College of Engineering in Paschim Vihar rescheduled its Saturday mid-term examinations to Monday. The college cited the expected closure of entry and exit gates at several Metro stations and possible disruptions to services. Examination timings are to remain unchanged when the papers are held on the revised date.

Maharaja Agrasen Institute of Technology in Rohini also deferred its Saturday mid-term examinations. The examinations were moved to October 12 after the institute received communication from Delhi Police regarding expected Metro restrictions. The report does not specify the stations or routes that would be affected.

The schedule revisions show how a security operation around a protest can extend beyond the immediate event zone and affect the functioning of educational institutions across different parts of Delhi. Schools and colleges have relied on online classes, cancellations and revised examination dates to reduce travel requirements for students, families and staff.

The changes also underline the dependence of Delhi’s education network on Metro access. Institutions in Lodhi Estate, central Delhi, Paschim Vihar and Rohini took separate decisions based on local safety concerns or expected restrictions on station access. For students appearing in time-bound examinations, even a temporary closure of entry and exit gates can require institutions to move assessments to another day.

The affected institutions have announced different next steps. Sardar Patel Vidyalaya will conduct Classes VI to XII online on Saturday, while Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan’s Mehta Vidyalaya has cancelled the listed activities. Raghubir Singh Junior Modern School is expected to announce a fresh date for its parent-teacher meeting, and the two colleges have shifted examinations to Monday and October 12 respectively.
