Tamil Nadu faces heavy rain in nine districts on October 9, with thunderstorms and strong winds of 40 to 50 kmph possible in isolated areas, according to the Chennai Meteorological Centre. Heavy rain is also forecast in three districts on October 10.
The warning covers the hilly areas of Coimbatore and Tirunelveli, along with the districts of Nilgiris, Theni, Tenkasi, Dindigul, Madurai, Virudhunagar and Kanniyakumari. The weather centre said isolated locations in these areas could receive heavy rain accompanied by thunder and lightning.
The forecast is significant for hill roads, inter-district travel and settlements in areas where intense rainfall can quickly affect visibility, road conditions and local drainage. The expected wind speed of 40 to 50 kmph may also affect exposed infrastructure and outdoor activity during thunderstorms.
Moderate rain is likely in isolated places across Thoothukudi, Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga, Pudukkottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Tiruchirappalli, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Karur, Namakkal, Tiruppur, Erode and Salem districts on October 9.
For October 10, heavy rain with thunder and lightning and winds of 40 to 50 kmph is forecast in isolated areas of the hilly regions of Coimbatore, Nilgiris and Theni. The forecast therefore shifts the main concentration of heavy-rain risk towards three districts the following day.
Moderate rain accompanied by thunder and strong winds is also likely in isolated places in Dindigul, Virudhunagar, Madurai, Sivaganga, Ramanathapuram, Thoothukudi, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli and Kanniyakumari on October 10, the weather centre said.
The district-wise forecast places both urban and rural areas across western, southern and central Tamil Nadu under varying levels of rain risk. Local authorities and residents in the affected districts will need to account for the possibility of sudden downpours, lightning and strong winds while planning travel and outdoor activity.
The Chennai Meteorological Centre’s advisory does not specify rainfall totals, evacuation instructions or closures in the supplied forecast. Its next operational updates will determine whether the district-level rain outlook is revised and whether additional warnings are issued for specific locations.
