Delhi Metro will restrict entry and exit at 57 stations from 9pm on October 9 through October 10, following a Delhi Police request ahead of the Cockroach Janata Party’s proposed protest at Jantar Mantar on Saturday. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation said the restrictions were being imposed for security reasons and would remain in force until further notice.
DMRC announced the decision in a service update posted on X on Friday. The affected stations are spread across several lines and include major interchange and central Delhi locations such as Central Secretariat, Patel Chowk, Kashmere Gate, New Delhi, Hauz Khas, Mandi House, Supreme Court, Rajiv Chowk, India Gate-area stations and stations serving southern, northern and eastern parts of the city.
The Delhi Police request, cited by DMRC, sought the closure of the 57 stations from Friday night through Saturday because of the possibility of “unruly mob movement towards sensitive locations”. The police also said train frequency through the identified stations could be reduced on October 10, depending on the situation.
Passengers will generally be able to use interchange facilities at the affected stations, according to DMRC. New Delhi metro station is the exception: entry and exit restrictions will apply there and interchange facilities will also be unavailable. This could affect passengers changing lines or connecting with rail services through the New Delhi area.
The restrictions cover stations including Jamia Millia Islamia, Okhla Vihar, Kalindi Kunj, Jasola Vihar, Shaheen Bagh, Rithala, Seelampur, Civil Lines, Vidhan Sabha, Lok Kalyan Marg, Jor Bagh, Khan Market, Jangpura, Ashram, Sarai Kale Khan-Nizamuddin, Shalimar Bagh, Maujpur-Babarpur, Jahangirpuri and Netaji Subhash Place. DMRC’s list also includes several stations along corridors serving central Delhi, where passenger movement may be affected during the protest period.
The CJP has planned the demonstration at Jantar Mantar against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The proposed protest is the immediate reason for the security measures described in the police communication, while DMRC will implement the station-level restrictions and any operational changes required during the period.
Commuters travelling through central Delhi or planning to change metro lines at one of the affected stations have been advised to check the latest DMRC service updates before beginning their journeys. The corporation’s restrictions and any change in train frequency will depend on the security situation through October 10.
