Delhi Metro Faces 57-Station Shutdown Plan Ahead of 10 October Protest

Delhi Metro closures planned amid heightened security near a Jantar Mantar protest

Delhi Metro services and rail travel into the capital could face major disruption on 10 October as police prepare for a proposed protest at Jantar Mantar and increase security checks across Delhi-NCR, according to a report by Live Hindustan – NCR.

The report said Delhi Police has proposed closing entry and exit gates at 57 Delhi Metro stations from 9 pm on 9 October until the situation returns to normal. The proposal also includes reducing the number of trains operating at the affected stations. The proposal was conveyed through a letter from Delhi Metro Police to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, according to the report.

The proposed restrictions are linked to the planned protest by the Cockroach Janta Party, or CJP. The party’s founder, Abhijeet Deepke, has announced a march to Jantar Mantar on 10 October to demand the cancellation of the Special Intensive Revision, or SIR, and accountability over the alleged removal of voters’ names. The report said Delhi Police did not grant permission for the protest, citing a late application and alleged violations of rules during an earlier demonstration.

Deepke was quoted as saying that the protest would go ahead despite the lack of permission. He argued that Jantar Mantar is the designated location for protests and referred to the constitutional right to demonstrate. His statements represent the party’s position and were not independently established in the supplied report.

Security checks have also been increased at the Uttar Pradesh Gate and the Chilla border. Gautam Buddh Nagar Police conducted an intensive checking operation at Chilla border in coordination with Delhi Police, while additional personnel were deployed at borders connecting the district with Delhi, the report said. It also reported information about some people being placed under house arrest, but did not provide further details or identify those individuals.

The proposed restrictions could affect commuters, residents and visitors using Delhi’s central transport network. Jantar Mantar is located near major government, commercial and transport destinations in New Delhi, making access controls and road checks relevant beyond the immediate protest site. The supplied report did not establish which specific metro stations would be affected or whether the proposed closures had received final operational approval from the DMRC.

Rail travel could also be affected. According to the report, the railway authorities cancelled all mail and express trains scheduled to reach New Delhi and Hazrat Nizamuddin on 10 October, citing the possibility of traffic congestion linked to the protest march. The report did not provide a train-wise list, a cancellation notice or details of alternative arrangements for passengers.

Delhi Police has registered 25 first information reports in connection with protests held in the capital since 2 October, the report said. The cases relate to alleged damage to public property, clashes or physical altercations involving police personnel, obstruction of government work and alleged violations of Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita in New Delhi district.

The report also said 12,000 Central Reserve Police Force personnel had been airlifted from West Bengal, Chhattisgarh and Jammu and Kashmir to support Delhi Police. The deployment was described as part of preparations to maintain law and order as the CJP protest approaches. Further official details on the final metro plan, train cancellations, traffic diversions and public advisories were not included in the supplied material.
