Delhi Illegal Parking Crackdown Gets Two-Month Enforcement Push

Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu has directed civic and transport agencies to intensify action against illegal parking and improve the use of existing parking facilities, as unauthorised parking continues to contribute to mobility bottlenecks across the Capital.

At a high-level meeting on Thursday, Sandhu asked the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, the New Delhi Municipal Council and the Delhi Traffic Police to conduct joint enforcement drives at parking sites and prevent vehicles from occupying unauthorised spaces. Resident Welfare Associations and market associations will also be involved in enforcement around multi-level parking facilities.

The Delhi Traffic Police informed the meeting that 13,34,700 challans and 5,54,073 notices had been issued for unauthorised parking till October 5 this year. During the same period, 1,24,906 vehicles were towed using 76 cranes, according to the figures presented at the meeting.

The MCD has planned a dedicated enforcement drive from October 15 to December 15. The operation will cover identified parking hotspots and market corridors, where roadside and unauthorised parking can affect traffic movement and access to formal parking facilities.

Delhi currently has 463 parking sites with a combined capacity of 94,831 equivalent car spaces. These include 433 surface parking sites and 30 multi-level or stack parking facilities. The figures indicate the scale of the city’s formal parking network, while the enforcement plan is intended to improve compliance around these facilities and reduce unauthorised vehicle parking.

The Lieutenant Governor has also sought uniform parking charges across facilities, expanded Park and Ride options, parking-slot tracking and a unified parking authority. These measures would bring pricing, facility use, monitoring and enforcement under a more coordinated framework, although the supplied report does not specify when the proposed changes will be implemented or which agency would lead the unified authority.

The planned MCD enforcement operation is scheduled to begin on October 15 and continue until December 15. Joint action by the civic agencies, Traffic Police, RWAs and market associations is expected to form part of the implementation at the identified hotspots and market corridors.
