A high-end car was destroyed in a fire after it allegedly rammed a fuel dispenser at a petrol bunk on Bengaluru-Hosur Road in Attibele around 11 pm on Wednesday, injuring a bunk employee and leading police to take the driver into custody.

The driver, identified as Sanjay, a resident of Parappana Agrahara, was reportedly in an inebriated condition when he entered the bunk to refuel, according to a report by Deccan Chronicle. Police action followed after petrol bunk staff alerted the authorities and stopped him while he allegedly attempted to leave the scene.

The collision occurred while the car was third in line for refuelling. An eyewitness told the newspaper that a bunk employee asked the driver whether he wanted petrol or diesel before the car suddenly moved towards the dispensing machine. The impact uprooted the machine, which fell on a staff member identified as Gundu Kumar.

Gundu Kumar sustained injuries to his head and legs, according to the report. The vehicle caught fire after the collision, with witnesses reporting sparks at the site. Bunk personnel attempted to control the flames but were unable to contain them, after which fire force personnel were alerted and arrived to extinguish the fire.

The incident was recorded by passers-by on their mobile phones as the car burned at the fuel station. The fire destroyed the vehicle. The report said Sanjay had initially collided with Gundu Kumar before the car struck the dispenser, while police were informed after the fire broke out.

A staff member at the petrol bunk confirmed that two people, including the driver, were inside the car. The passenger, identified in the report as a girl, escaped from the vehicle after the collision.

The report said Sanjay was taken into custody after bunk staff caught him while he allegedly tried to flee. It did not provide details of the charges registered, the extent of the passenger’s condition or the findings of any medical examination.
