The Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) has received the Changemaker Award in the ‘Innovation in Public Transit’ category, recognising its efforts to modernise Bengaluru’s public transport network and strengthen connections across the city. The award was presented at the Mobility Symposium 2026 held in Bengaluru on Thursday.

BMTC public relations officer Sunita J. accepted the award from retired IAS officer Vikram Kapoor on behalf of the transport corporation. According to the report, the recognition was given for BMTC’s continuing efforts to modernise public transport, improve connectivity and promote more sustainable urban mobility.

The award cited several initiatives undertaken by BMTC to expand and upgrade Bengaluru’s public transport system. These include airport transport services, operations along the NICE Road corridor and technology-led passenger services.

BMTC currently operates about 1,000 airport-service trips each day, serving between 12,000 and 15,000 airport passengers daily. On the NICE Road corridor, the corporation operates around 250 trips a day, with approximately 18,000 passengers using the services, according to the information presented in the report.

The corporation has also introduced an updated mobile application called ‘Namma BMTC 2.0’ as part of its digital transformation programme. The application provides passengers with live information on buses in operation and estimated arrival times, along with route and bus-stop details.

The app also supports digital ticket purchases, bus-pass services, journey planning and digital payments. BMTC said the platform includes an integrated ticketing facility for BMTC and Namma Metro, allowing passengers to plan bus journeys, metro journeys and combined bus–metro trips through a single digital platform.

The recognition comes as Bengaluru’s daily mobility increasingly depends on coordination between different public transport services. Airport routes, corridor services and integrated digital tools address different parts of the passenger journey, from reaching major transport gateways and peripheral corridors to obtaining real-time information and planning transfers.

For commuters, the practical value of these services depends on the accuracy and availability of live information, the ease of digital ticketing and the ability to make transfers between buses and the metro through connected systems. The award acknowledges BMTC’s initiatives, while the corporation’s next step will be to continue operating and expanding these services across the city’s public transport network.

BMTC’s recognition was formally presented at the Mobility Symposium 2026, where its public transport and technology initiatives were highlighted as part of Bengaluru’s efforts to modernise urban mobility.
