Hyderabad Drunk Driving Crash Kills 65-Year-Old in Shamshabad

Hyderabad drunk driving crash scene near Shamshabad involving a truck and two-wheeler

A 65-year-old man died after a truck allegedly driven by an intoxicated driver hit the two-wheeler on which he was travelling in Shamshabad late on Wednesday night, according to RGIA police. The truck driver was arrested after an on-the-spot alcohol test recorded a blood alcohol count of 156 mg/100 ml, more than five times the permissible limit of 30 mg/100 ml.

The victim, Mohammed Jaffar, a resident of Bandlaguda, was returning home from a wedding function with his friend, Sheikh Aslam, when the crash occurred at Satamrai at around 11.30 pm, police said. Both men were injured and taken to a local hospital. Jaffar died while undergoing treatment, while Aslam was discharged on Thursday afternoon.

Police registered a case against the truck driver, identified as Yadadri, based on a complaint filed by Jaffar’s son. The case has been registered under Sections 106 and 125 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, relating to negligence causing death and endangering human life, respectively.

According to police, people at the scene detained the driver after finding him drunk and handed him over to officers who arrived after being alerted. RGIA sub-inspector N Sridhar said the driver had been travelling towards Hyderabad from Shadnagar when one of the lorry’s tyres deflated on the way.

Police said the driver consumed liquor while the tyre was being repaired and then resumed the journey towards the city. He was reportedly travelling to Bandlaguda when the truck hit the two-wheeler at Satamrai.

The incident places renewed attention on the risks faced by two-wheeler users on routes carrying heavy commercial vehicles around Hyderabad’s outskirts. The police action in this case includes the arrest of the driver, registration of the case and documentation of the alcohol level recorded during the investigation. Further legal proceedings will follow under the sections invoked by RGIA police.
