Hyderabad Techie Alleges ₹22 Lakh Loan-App Extortion; Case Filed

Loan app extortion case filed by a Hyderabad techie with Cyberabad police.

Cyberabad Cyber Crime police have registered a case after a 38-year-old technology professional from Kukatpally alleged that loan-app recovery agents extorted more than ₹22 lakh from him through threats, abusive messages and misuse of his phone contacts.

The complainant told police that he borrowed money from 34 loan applications over a year for personal needs and subsequently repaid more than the amount he had availed. He alleged that recovery agents continued demanding payments despite the repayments and warned that objectionable messages about him would be sent to his family, friends, employer and neighbours.

According to the complaint, the man borrowed more than ₹1.56 crore from applications affiliated with non-banking financial companies between September 8, 2025, and October 1, 2026. During the same period, he paid about ₹1.79 crore through payment gateway links sent by the applications. He said he received a refund of about ₹1 lakh from one application and paid more than ₹22.9 lakh towards what he described as illegal interest, processing fees and penalties under coercion.

The complainant alleged that the recovery agents demanded interest of almost 1% per day and used the pressure created by the demands to force him to borrow from additional loan applications. He also told police that agents called him late at night and early in the morning and accessed data stored on his phone, including his contacts.

The alleged harassment extended beyond direct calls, according to the complaint. The agents allegedly sent abusive and obscene messages to people known to the complainant and threatened to defame him unless further payments were made. Even after the payments, he said, the agents demanded another ₹6 lakh.

The man told police that he had received calls from 63 different mobile numbers since September 25. He alleged that the callers spoke in Hindi and used blackmail and threats during the conversations. The complaint does not establish the identities of the individual callers or the specific loan applications involved; those details will be subject to the police investigation.

Cyberabad Cyber Crime police registered the case on Wednesday under Section 308(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for extortion, Section 351(2) for criminal intimidation and Section 318(4) for cheating. The case also invokes Sections 66-C, 66-D and 67 of the Information Technology Act, covering alleged identity misuse, computer-related cheating and transmission of obscene material.

The complaint places the focus on how digital lending disputes can move beyond repayment demands into the use of personal data and social pressure. The next steps in the case will include tracing the numbers used to contact the complainant, identifying the recovery agents and examining the payment records and loan-app links cited in the complaint.
