Kolkata App Cab Driver Under Police Probe After Actress Injured

Kolkata app cab near Kalighat Metro station at night with police investigating passenger safety

Kolkata Police have begun investigating an app-cab driver after actor Sampita Pramanik alleged that she was dragged by the moving vehicle and injured near Kalighat Metro station in south Kolkata. The actor lodged a complaint at Kalighat police station after receiving initial medical treatment.

According to the complaint, Pramanik had booked the cab after completing a late-night shoot at NT-1 Studio in Tollygunge. She is a resident of Tala in north Kolkata. The report said a dispute began during the journey over the route and fare.

The driver allegedly stopped the vehicle near the Kalighat Metro station, close to Rashbehari intersection, and asked the passenger to get out. Pramanik reportedly left the cab but realised that her bag was still inside. When she reached through the vehicle’s window to retrieve it, the driver allegedly started driving.

The actor told police that she held on to the vehicle’s door and shouted for help as the cab moved forward. She was allegedly dragged along the road for some distance before losing her grip and falling. The report said another vehicle then struck her as she landed on the road.

Passers-by helped Pramanik stand up, but the cab driver had allegedly left the area with her bag. She later went to Kalighat police station and submitted a complaint, providing investigators with the driver’s name and the vehicle’s registration number.

Police are examining CCTV footage from the Rashbehari area to reconstruct the sequence of events and identify the vehicle’s movements. The police have said action will be taken against the driver based on the investigation.

The case highlights the immediate safety risks that can arise when disputes between passengers and app-cab drivers escalate after a vehicle has stopped on a busy city road. In this case, the complaint places the reported incident around a major transport and commercial zone near Kalighat Metro station and Rashbehari intersection, where traffic, pedestrians and multiple vehicles share limited road space.

The available report records the allegations made by the passenger and the police response. It does not include the driver’s account or a finding from the CCTV review. The investigation will determine the sequence of events and the action, if any, to be taken against the driver. Police are continuing to examine the footage and the details submitted with the complaint.
