A fire at a workers’ camp linked to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s Project Affected Persons programme in Mulund East led to the evacuation of all occupants on Thursday afternoon after at least seven gas cylinders exploded, police and civic officials said. No casualties or fatalities had been reported at the time of the report.
The blaze was reported from a G1 labour camp at an under-construction building in the Tata Nagar area, behind Purva Nagar building on Navghar Road. The site was being used to accommodate construction workers engaged in the BMC’s PAP project.
According to officials, the fire was suspected to have begun as a small blaze at the site before spreading and causing the cylinders to explode. The exact cause of the fire and the circumstances surrounding the explosions were still being ascertained.
The Mumbai Fire Brigade received the incident call at 1.54 pm on October 8 and declared it a Level I fire at about 2.05 pm. Fire brigade personnel were sent to the site and began firefighting and relief operations. The blaze was reported to have been extinguished at around 3.50 pm, while officials continued assessing the location and the extent of damage.
All occupants of the labour camp were evacuated safely, according to the report. A senior Mumbai Police official also confirmed that no casualties or fatalities had been reported. The immediate safety response focused on clearing the premises and managing the site after the cylinder explosions.
Multiple agencies were mobilised following the incident, including the Mumbai Fire Brigade, Mumbai Police, Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company, BMC ward staff and a 108 ambulance. Civic officials said necessary arrangements had been made at the site, while further details about the fire’s cause and any structural or material damage remained awaited.
The incident places attention on the safety conditions at temporary worker accommodation located within or beside active construction sites. In this case, the camp formed part of a BMC-linked PAP project, making the management of worker housing, cooking facilities, electrical systems and emergency access relevant to the ongoing assessment. The authorities had not released further details on those arrangements or announced any separate inquiry at the time of publication.
Officials were continuing to gather information and assess the site after the fire was brought under control. The next formal updates are expected to clarify the cause of the blaze, the extent of damage and whether the labour camp can be occupied again.
