NIBM Annexe Families Demand Public Park as Safety Concerns Rise

NIBM Annexe open plot beside high-rise societies sought for a public park and walking track

More than 7,000 families in Pune’s NIBM Annexe have asked the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to convert an open plot in front of Elina Living Society, Mohammadwadi, into a public park with a walking and jogging track, citing safety, garbage, traffic and noise concerns. Residents have also approached the Pune Police over alleged recurring nuisance linked to commercial and community events held at the site.

Residents of Elina Living Society, Raheja Sterling, Maple Tower, Orient Hill View, Elina and other nearby high-rise societies submitted a representation to PMC Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram on September 17. According to the representation, the surrounding buildings include several towers exceeding 20 floors, but the area lacks an adequate public park or dedicated space for walking and exercise.

Residents said senior citizens and others who walk or jog in the morning and evening are forced to use busy roads because of the shortage of recreational facilities. They have argued that a formally developed park would provide a safer location for physical activity and reduce exposure to traffic and potential accident risks.

The condition of the open plot has also become a central concern. Residents alleged that waste is frequently left behind after commercial or community events, causing the site to function as an unofficial dumping ground. They said people from neighbouring societies have repeatedly organised voluntary clean-ups and attempted to restore damaged plants and trees.

The representation states that the plot contains more than 250 native trees, including both small and large trees. Residents have asked that the existing trees be protected and incorporated into any future development rather than allowing the site to be used for activities that could damage the green cover.

Safety concerns have also been raised, particularly during evening and night hours. Residents alleged that anti-social activities have increased around the neglected plot, creating apprehension among women and senior citizens. They told the civic authorities that a public park, walking track and regular maintenance could improve visibility and safety around the site.

Separately, Elina Living A & B Wing Co-operative Housing Society Limited submitted a representation to the Pune Police Commissioner on September 17 concerning what it described as recurring public nuisance from commercial activities on the plot adjoining the society in Mohammadwadi, Taluka Haveli, Pune district.

According to the police representation, two prolonged events or activities were held at the location from February 18 to March 20, 2026, and from June 17 to June 26, 2026. Residents alleged that loudspeakers, amplified music, large gatherings, vehicle movement and other event-related activities caused continuous disturbance during these periods.

The residents said the plot’s immediate proximity to residential buildings intensified the effects of noise, traffic and crowd movement. They alleged that waste accumulated after the events and that the disturbance particularly affected children, senior citizens and other residents. On one occasion, they claimed, the disruption continued for almost a month.

While acknowledging that religious, cultural and social celebrations are part of community life, the society told the police that the location was unsuitable for commercial events, large gatherings or prolonged functions because it directly adjoins residential buildings. It requested intervention to prevent such activities from continuing and asked that local authorities be informed.

In their representation to the PMC, residents sought coordination with the agencies concerned to officially designate and develop the open plot as a public park with a walking and jogging track. They also asked that it not continue as a commercial or event space or as an unofficial dumping ground. The representations and requested action remain with the civic and police authorities.
