The Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) and the Bengal Business Council (BBC) have signed a memorandum of understanding to strengthen West Bengal’s MSME sector through improved access to finance, training, technology, institutional support and markets.
The agreement will focus on providing BBC-affiliated MSME members with access to SIDBI’s financial schemes, training programmes and business guidance. The partnership is being implemented under SIDBI’s Development & Institutional Assistance (DIA) programme.
Under the arrangement, members of the Bengal Business Council will be able to connect more directly with SIDBI’s support systems. The stated areas of cooperation include technology adoption, business expansion, market access and identifying new commercial opportunities for MSME enterprises.
Satadru Saha, SIDBI DIA’s regional single point of contact for West Bengal, said strengthening industry organisations was important for creating a more effective MSME ecosystem in the state. The agreement therefore places an industry association in the role of connecting member enterprises with financial and institutional assistance.
Avlio Roy, a governing body member of the Bengal Business Council and director-membership and IT, said the partnership would bring financial, technical and institutional support closer to MSME entrepreneurs. The statement did not specify the amount of funding available, the number of businesses expected to benefit or a fixed implementation timeline.
The MoU was signed during a Learnshop on “Institutional Strengthening of Industry Associations” organised under the DIA programme. Grant Thornton Bharat LLP organised the event. The programme was designed to support industry associations and improve the services they provide to member businesses.
The partnership’s stated objectives extend beyond access to finance. It is also intended to expand opportunities for training, knowledge exchange, technology adoption and market linkages. The participating institutions said these measures would support entrepreneurship, competitiveness and employment generation in West Bengal.
For MSMEs, such institutional access can determine whether support schemes are reachable in practice. The agreement creates a formal channel between SIDBI and BBC members, but its eventual impact will depend on how many enterprises use the available programmes, what assistance they receive and how the partnership is implemented. No details on enrolment procedures, project targets or monitoring arrangements were provided in the announcement.
The next stage will involve connecting BBC-affiliated enterprises with SIDBI’s financial schemes, training initiatives and business guidance under the DIA framework. Further operational details were not announced.
