Assam Student’s Train Death Raises Serious Safety Questions

Railway police investigating the Assam student train death near tracks in Andhra Pradesh

A 20-year-old student from Assam who went missing while travelling on the Kanyakumari–Dibrugarh Vivek Express has been found dead near a railway track in Andhra Pradesh, with railway police investigating how she left the train and the circumstances of her death.

Himashri Boro, a student of B Borooah College and a resident of Guwahati, had travelled to Visakhapatnam on September 30 as part of a dance troupe from Assam. She was returning to Guwahati on train number 22503 when her family lost contact with her.

According to her family, Boro spoke to a friend at around 12.39am during the journey and reportedly said that some boys were bullying and misbehaving with her. The call was later disconnected, and her phone became unreachable.

Her family subsequently filed a missing person complaint. The Railway Protection Force and police then began searching for her. During the investigation, railway police recovered her luggage from the S2 coach of the train.

Police have also collected CCTV footage and video footage showing Boro travelling on the train. The footage is part of the investigation into her movements and the events preceding her disappearance, according to the report.

Railway police later recovered her body near a railway track in Andhra Pradesh and informed her family. The cause of death has not yet been established, and police have not publicly determined how she came to be near the tracks.

The case has drawn attention to the safety of passengers travelling on long-distance trains, particularly when a passenger is reported missing during an ongoing journey. The available details do not establish whether Boro’s death was accidental, a result of an assault or linked to any other circumstance. Those questions remain part of the investigation.

Boro’s family, which is from Kamrup district, has also approached Assam Police for assistance. Former All Bodo Students’ Union president Dipen Boro has urged the authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances of her death and ensure justice for the family.

The investigation is expected to focus on the CCTV and video evidence, the recovered luggage, the phone call reported by the family and the sequence of events aboard the train. Authorities have not yet announced the cause of death or provided a final account of what happened.
