Kolkata Metro Adds Overnight Trains for Durga Puja Pandal Hopping

Kolkata Metro train serving Durga Puja crowds during extended night services

Kolkata Metro will run services until 4 am on the Blue and Green Lines during the peak Durga Puja days of Saptami, Ashtami and Navami, offering extended late-night transport for pandal hoppers across the city. The special schedule will apply from October 17 to 20, according to a plan reported by The Statesman and attributed to the city Metro office.

On Panchami and Shashthi, falling on October 15 and 16, services on the Blue and Green Lines will operate from 6 am to 11 pm from the terminal stations. On Saptami, Ashtami and Navami, trains on both corridors will run from 1 pm until 4 am the following morning. The Blue Line will maintain a peak-hour frequency of six minutes during these three days.

The Blue Line is one of Kolkata Metro’s principal passenger corridors, while the Green Line provides a key east-west connection through the city. Extending their operating hours is intended to support the large movement of residents and visitors who travel between neighbourhood puja sites during the night. The schedule effectively shifts Metro operations beyond the normal evening peak and into the early hours when road-based travel can become more difficult during festival crowds.

Metro services will be shorter on Dashami. The Blue Line will operate from 1 pm to 10.30 pm, while the Green Line will run from 1.30 pm to 10.30 pm. The timings mark a separate post-peak schedule as the festival period concludes.

The Metro’s other corridors will follow different operating plans. On Panchami and Shashthi, the Yellow Line will run from 7.18 am to 9.20 pm, including five direct services from Jai Hind Bimanbandar to Shahid Khudiram. The Purple Line will operate from 6.40 am to 9.26 pm, while the Orange Line will run from 7.40 am to 8.45 pm.

During Saptami, Ashtami and Navami, Yellow Line services are scheduled from 3 pm to 10.53 pm. The Purple Line will operate from 3 pm to 10.55 pm from Saptami through Dashami. The Orange Line will not operate from October 17 to 21. On Dashami, the Yellow Line will run from 3 pm to 9.38 pm.

The staggered schedules mean that late-night Metro connectivity will be concentrated on the Blue and Green Lines, while passengers using the Yellow, Purple and Orange corridors will have to plan around their separate service windows. The city Metro office’s festival timetable sets out the operating hours and corridor-specific changes for each major Puja day.
