Kolkata Metro will run special services, including overnight trains on the Blue and Green lines, during key Durga Puja days from October 17 to October 20, while services on the Orange Line will remain suspended for most of the festival, according to Metro authorities cited by Sangbad Pratidin.
The extended operations are intended to support the sharp increase in travel expected during the festival, when residents and visitors move across the city through the night for pandal-hopping. On the Blue Line, trains will operate through the night on the two Saptami days, Ashtami and Navami. During peak periods, trains on the line will run at six-minute intervals.
The Green Line will also operate overnight on the same festival days, with trains scheduled at eight-minute intervals during busy periods. The report said services on the Blue Line will begin at 1 pm from October 17 to October 20 and continue until 4 am the following morning. On the Green Line, services will begin at 1.30 pm and continue until 3.59 am the next day.
Regular and additional services have also been planned for the earlier Puja days. On Panchami and Shashthi, the Blue Line will operate 284 trains, with services starting at 6 am and the last train scheduled at 11 pm. The Green Line will operate 240 trains on those two days.
The Blue Line schedule will change again on Dashami. The line will run 140 trains between 1 pm and 10.30 pm, with an eight-minute frequency during peak periods. On the Green Line, 74 trains will operate between 1.30 pm and 10.30 pm, with trains scheduled every 15 minutes during the busiest period.
The Yellow and Purple lines will also receive special services throughout the Puja period, according to the report. The Orange Line, however, will operate only on Panchami and Shashthi. Services on that line will remain completely suspended on the two Saptami days, Ashtami, Navami and Dashami.
The revised schedules are significant for Kolkata’s festival mobility because they extend rail operations beyond the normal evening service window on the busiest nights. They also create different operating patterns across the city’s Metro corridors, requiring passengers to check the line-specific timetable before planning late-night journeys.
Metro authorities’ Puja timetable covers service frequency, operating hours and line closures for the festival period. The overnight Blue and Green Line services are scheduled to continue until the early morning on the designated days, while the Orange Line’s suspension will apply from the two Saptami days through Dashami.
