LG Hospital Wall Collapse Kills Worker During Ahmedabad Work

Collapsed boundary wall at Ahmedabad's LG Hospital compound after a fatal construction accident

A 27-year-old worker died after a boundary wall collapsed during soil-filling work near a newly constructed building inside the LG Hospital compound in Ahmedabad’s Maninagar area, with Maninagar police registering an accidental death case in connection with the incident.

The collapse occurred at around 9 am on Tuesday at the old LG Hospital compound, where construction-related work was under way. The worker, identified as Chhutun Shukrumar Mandal, was reportedly trapped beneath the wall after pressure from the soil filling caused the adjoining structure to give way.

Mandal, originally from Yadpur in West Bengal’s Malda district, had been living inside the hospital compound while working as a labourer. The collapse left him seriously injured and unconscious. A fellow worker, identified in the report as Krishna, took him to the LG Hospital intensive care unit at around 9:20 am.

Doctors treated Mandal in the ICU but declared him dead at 11:05 am. The incident therefore unfolded within the premises of a functioning public hospital, where the injured worker was taken for emergency treatment soon after the collapse.

The hospital outpost informed Maninagar police about the incident. Assistant Sub-Inspector Rajeshbhai went to the site after receiving the communication, and police recorded the case as an accidental death. The available report does not specify whether the wall was part of an active construction package, who was responsible for the soil-filling work or whether any safety notice had been issued before the collapse.

The incident highlights the immediate safety risks created when excavation, soil filling and construction activity take place alongside existing structures and occupied institutional premises. In this case, the report states that the soil filling increased pressure on the adjacent wall before it collapsed, but it does not provide details about the wall’s structural condition, the site’s protective arrangements or the contractor overseeing the work.

The death also raises questions about how construction zones are separated from workers and other hospital users inside public healthcare campuses. The available account does not state whether the work area had been cordoned off, whether a site engineer or safety supervisor was present, or whether a formal technical assessment of the collapsed wall had been completed.

Police action has begun with the registration of the accidental death case and a site visit by the investigating officer. Further details about the construction agency, the condition of the wall and any subsequent administrative or technical inquiry were not available in the report.
