An AI road survey across Bengaluru North civic limits has identified 14,393 potholes on 2,493.5 km of roads, while reporting that 82.1% of the surveyed network is in good or adequate condition. The findings are expected to guide priorities for road repairs, maintenance, restoration and future development works across 72 wards.
The survey used artificial intelligence-based technology to assess the current condition of roads and identify locations requiring attention. It also recorded damage caused by utility works, surface defects and roads that remain unpaved or in a raw condition.
According to the survey findings reported by Vijay Karnataka, 1,426.8 km of roads were classified as being in good condition. Another 607.1 km had minor surface defects. Together, these two categories account for 82.1% of the surveyed road length. The remaining 17.9% was reported to include roads damaged by utility works as well as some unpaved roads.
The survey recorded an average of 5.8 potholes per kilometre across the road network. In addition to the pothole count, it identified 102 km of roads in the E-3 category, with 544 roads in this category reported to have been damaged by utility works. The findings are intended to help the civic administration determine where maintenance, repair, restoration or wider road development should receive priority.
The survey also identified 821 roads without asphalt or classified as raw roads. These roads are expected to be considered in future road development plans according to local requirements, with the stated objective of improving road connectivity and safety for residents.
The division-level findings show significant variation across the surveyed network. Rajarajeshwari Nagar recorded 117.9 km of roads, with 85% classified as being in good condition and 1,222 potholes identified. Pulakeshinagar had 149.5 km of roads, 75% in good condition and 1,357 potholes. By road length, Byatarayanapura was the largest division in the survey, covering 823.5 km, with 82% of roads in good condition and 5,964 potholes.
Sarvagnanagar recorded 406.6 km of roads, 86% in good condition and 2,359 potholes. Hebbal had 293.2 km of roads, 83% in good condition and 1,368 potholes, while Dasarahalli covered 313.5 km, with 81% of roads in good condition and 966 potholes. Yelahanka accounted for 389.5 km of roads and 157 potholes; the source report’s formatting of its good-condition percentage is unclear.
The civic administration plans to use the survey data to prioritise repairs and development works based on the location and nature of road defects. The next stage will involve using the identified road, pothole, utility-damage and unpaved-road data to plan maintenance and infrastructure works across the surveyed wards.
