A 27-year-old labourer died after a boundary wall collapsed during earth-filling work near a newly constructed building inside the LG Hospital compound in Ahmedabad’s Maninagar area, with Maninagar police registering a case of accidental death.
The incident occurred at around 9am while construction work was under way at the compound of the old LG Hospital. The worker, identified as Chhutan Shukrumar Mandal, was reportedly carrying out masonry work when the wall suddenly collapsed on him.
According to the report, the earth-filling activity increased pressure on the adjoining wall, causing it to give way. Mandal suffered serious injuries and became unconscious after being trapped beneath the debris.
A co-worker identified as Krishna took him to the intensive care unit at LG Hospital at around 9.20am for emergency treatment. Doctors on duty declared him dead at approximately 11.05am, after treatment failed to save him.
Mandal was originally from Yadpur in West Bengal’s Malda district and had been staying inside the LG Hospital compound while working as a labourer. The incident therefore involved a worker who was living at the same institutional premises where the construction activity was taking place.
The hospital police outpost informed Maninagar police about the incident. Assistant Sub-Inspector Rajeshbhai went to the site after receiving the information, and police recorded the case as an accidental death. The available report does not identify the contractor, provide details of the wall’s age or construction condition, or state whether any additional safety inspection has been ordered.
The collapse highlights the immediate risks faced by workers during earth-filling and building activity, particularly where excavation, soil movement or newly placed material can exert pressure on adjoining structures. In this case, the police account cited in the report links the collapse to increased pressure from the filling work, while the investigation will establish the circumstances surrounding the death.
Further details on the construction agency, the approvals for the work and any compensation or assistance for the worker’s family were not available in the supplied report. The police investigation remains the next official step in determining how the wall collapsed and whether any safety-related breach is established.
