Authorities in Pune’s fast-growing Hinjawadi-Maan technology corridor have intensified pre-monsoon preparedness efforts, with multiple government agencies instructed to complete flood mitigation and drainage work before the end of May. The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) has warned that administrative lapses leading to flooding, infrastructure damage or public safety risks during the monsoon season could trigger action under disaster management provisions. The directive comes after repeated episodes of severe waterlogging and mobility disruption across Hinjawadi’s IT and residential zones over recent years. Officials said the region’s expanding urban footprint, ongoing infrastructure construction and pressure on natural drainage systems have made the corridor increasingly vulnerable to intense rainfall events linked to changing climate patterns.

During a high-level coordination review involving PMRDA, Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation, National Highways Authority of India, irrigation officials and local governing bodies, agencies were instructed to accelerate desilting operations, widen stormwater drains and remove encroachments obstructing natural water channels. Authorities have also been asked to identify vulnerable junctions where traffic congestion and flooding are likely to coincide during heavy rain. The Hinjawadi monsoon preparedness exercise is being closely monitored after last year’s disruptions paralysed movement across major technology parks and residential clusters. Even moderate rainfall had submerged internal roads, slowed emergency access and trapped thousands of commuters in prolonged traffic queues. Urban planners say the situation highlights a recurring challenge in rapidly urbanising peripheral districts where infrastructure expansion has not always been matched by integrated environmental planning. The Hinjawadi-Maan belt has transformed into one of western India’s largest technology and employment hubs, attracting large-scale housing development and commercial growth. However, experts argue that stormwater management systems and ecological buffers have struggled to keep pace with construction intensity. A senior urban resilience expert noted that many peri-urban corridors across India continue to lose natural water retention areas due to unchecked development and encroachments along streams and drainage paths. Without long-term watershed planning, such regions remain highly exposed to flash flooding and mobility collapse during extreme weather conditions. Officials indicated that field inspections will be conducted over the coming days to verify whether on-ground work matches administrative claims. Departments failing to complete assigned tasks within the prescribed timeline could face accountability proceedings if negligence contributes to property damage or public risk during the monsoon.

Residents and employee groups in the technology hub said early signs of preparation appear more visible this year, particularly around drain cleaning and restoration of water flow channels. However, concerns remain over unfinished construction debris, narrow internal roads and the coordination gap between overlapping civic agencies.
