Chennai Flyover Project Nears Final Construction Stage

Chennai’s long-delayed elevated corridor along Anna Salai is moving into an advanced phase of construction, with civic authorities indicating that the stretch between Saidapet and Teynampet could become operational by September 2026. The project is expected to alter one of the city’s busiest traffic corridors, where chronic congestion has increasingly affected commute times, fuel consumption and public transport efficiency.

The 3.2-km structure, designed as a steel flyover above existing road infrastructure, is being developed through a technically demanding alignment that passes directly over operational metro rail tunnels. Urban infrastructure officials involved in the project said more than two-thirds of the work has now been completed, including substantial progress in piling and structural assembly.The Anna Salai flyover has emerged as one of Chennai’s most closely watched transport interventions because of its location in the heart of the city’s commercial and institutional belt. Daily traffic volumes along the corridor have risen steadily over the past decade due to expanding residential growth in southern neighbourhoods and increased private vehicle dependence. Mobility experts note that delays along this arterial stretch have had broader economic implications, including logistics inefficiencies and rising transport costs for businesses operating in central Chennai.

Engineers associated with the project said the construction process has required extensive coordination with underground metro infrastructure, limiting the pace at which heavy structural components could be installed. Large portions of the precast segments and steel assemblies are being fabricated outside Tamil Nadu and transported to Chennai for installation, reflecting the specialised engineering requirements of the corridor.While transport planners argue that the elevated route may reduce travel bottlenecks for motorists, some urban development observers caution that flyovers alone cannot resolve long-term mobility stress in rapidly densifying cities. Experts in sustainable urban planning have repeatedly pointed to the need for stronger integration between road projects, pedestrian infrastructure, public transport systems and non-motorised mobility networks. The Anna Salai flyover also arrives at a time when Indian cities are reassessing the environmental impact of automobile-centric infrastructure. Elevated corridors can improve traffic flow in the short term, but urban researchers say such projects must be accompanied by investments in cleaner transit systems and safer last-mile connectivity to avoid reinforcing car dependency.

Construction activity had earlier slowed due to labour shortages, fluctuations in material costs and supply-chain pressures affecting steel and fuel prices. However, officials indicated that work momentum has improved in recent months, with deck installation accelerating across multiple sections of the corridor. Once opened, the Anna Salai flyover is expected to reduce signal delays and travel time between Saidapet and Teynampet, particularly during peak office hours. Urban policy analysts say the larger test, however, will be whether Chennai can balance high-capacity road infrastructure with climate-resilient and people-oriented mobility planning as the metropolitan region continues to expand.
