Ahmedabad Makarba Bridge Nears Traffic Relief

Ahmedabad’s western mobility corridor moved a step closer to expansion this week after civic authorities completed the installation of major steel composite girders on the Makarba railway overbridge project along SG Highway. The infrastructure upgrade is expected to ease persistent congestion around one of the city’s busiest transport junctions while improving connectivity between older residential clusters and emerging commercial districts.

The project, being executed jointly by municipal and railway authorities, includes a rail overbridge linking the Makarba corridor with SG Highway, a route that supports heavy commuter movement from Juhapura, Sarkhej and Vejalpur towards Ahmedabad’s corporate and institutional zones. Urban planners say the intervention reflects the city’s growing dependence on grade-separated infrastructure as vehicle ownership and peripheral real estate activity continue to expand. Officials associated with the project indicated that critical structural work involving steel composite girders has now been completed after coordinated traffic and rail movement restrictions. Construction teams are continuing deck and approach work, with the bridge expected to open in the coming weeks. The Makarba Bridge project has gained importance due to chronic delays caused by railway gate closures, which often create long traffic queues and spillover congestion onto adjacent arterial roads. Daily commuters in the area routinely experience extended travel times during peak hours, affecting public transport efficiency, fuel consumption and local air quality.

Urban mobility experts note that reducing stoppage points at railway crossings can significantly improve transport productivity in rapidly growing metropolitan regions. However, they caution that flyovers and elevated corridors alone cannot solve long-term congestion unless integrated with pedestrian infrastructure, public transport access and safer junction design. Concerns are also emerging around the bridge’s landing geometry near a busy intersection connecting SG Highway and internal urban roads. Transport safety specialists warn that descending traffic from elevated stretches could increase collision risks if lane discipline, signalling systems and speed-calming measures are not strengthened simultaneously. The issue highlights a wider challenge facing Indian cities where road expansion projects frequently prioritise vehicular throughput over multimodal safety planning. The Makarba Bridge is expected to directly benefit more than 150,000 residents and commuters travelling through western Ahmedabad each day. Local businesses and logistics operators are also likely to gain from reduced travel unpredictability across the corridor, particularly during office and school peak hours.

Ahmedabad has witnessed accelerated investment in transport infrastructure over the past decade, including metro expansion, corridor upgrades and rail-linked mobility projects. While such projects are improving regional connectivity and supporting economic growth, urban development observers argue that future infrastructure planning must increasingly align with climate resilience, public safety and equitable access rather than focusing solely on faster vehicle movement. As the Makarba Bridge approaches completion, attention is likely to shift towards operational safety, traffic integration and whether the corridor can support a more balanced and sustainable urban mobility network.
