A fresh dispute over civic construction standards has emerged in south Chennai after a legislator intervened in an ongoing stormwater drain project, raising concerns over execution quality and oversight in one of the city’s flood-prone neighbourhoods. The episode has renewed attention on how urban infrastructure meant to improve climate resilience is being monitored on the ground.

The inspection took place in Velachery’s Jeevarathnam Nagar, where stormwater drain works are underway as part of Chennai’s broader flood mitigation and monsoon preparedness programme. During a site visit earlier this week, the local legislator directed Greater Chennai Corporation officials to suspend contractor payments after measurements at the site allegedly showed deviations from approved construction specifications.According to civic officials familiar with the matter, portions of the reinforced concrete structure were found to be thinner than prescribed standards. The inspection reportedly included physical verification of slab and wall dimensions, following which engineers were instructed to formally document deficiencies and seek rectification before further payments are processed.The contractor has since been asked to dismantle and reconstruct parts of the structure that failed to meet design requirements. Local administration officials indicated corrective work would begin immediately under engineering supervision.
