Mumbai Dahisar Transport Hub Targets Highway Congestion

Mumbai’s municipal administration is advancing plans for a large-scale transport interchange in Dahisar aimed at intercepting interstate and private buses before they enter the city, as authorities attempt to ease mounting congestion across the western suburbs and reduce pressure on key arterial corridors. The proposed Dahisar Transport Hub, estimated to cost more than ₹1,200 crore, is expected to come up at the site of the former octroi checkpoint near the city’s northern entry point. Civic officials say the project is designed to reorganise the movement of long-distance buses that currently travel deep into Mumbai’s dense urban core, often contributing to bottlenecks along the Western Express Highway and adjoining roads.

Urban mobility experts say the initiative reflects a broader shift towards edge-of-city transit infrastructure increasingly being adopted by large metropolitan regions struggling with road saturation and rising private vehicle dependency. Mumbai’s western corridor, particularly stretches connecting Borivali, Kandivali, Andheri and Bandra, experiences severe peak-hour congestion aggravated by interstate coaches stopping informally for passenger pick-up and drop-off operations. According to planning documents reviewed by officials, the Dahisar Transport Hub will include parking infrastructure for hundreds of interstate buses alongside a large multi-level facility for private vehicles. The project also proposes passenger amenities such as waiting lounges, short-stay accommodation, retail areas and integrated mobility zones linked to public transport systems. A key component of the plan is its proposed integration with Mumbai Metro corridors, including connectivity to Metro Lines 7 and 9. Transport planners believe such multimodal integration could reduce dependence on private vehicles for onward travel while improving commuter transfers between regional and intra-city transport networks. Urban planners note that transport hubs positioned at city entry points can help reduce unnecessary heavy vehicle movement within dense neighbourhoods, lowering travel delays, roadside congestion and local air pollution. Diesel-powered interstate buses are considered a major contributor to traffic friction and transport-related emissions on several urban corridors.

However, mobility researchers caution that the long-term success of the Dahisar Transport Hub will depend on efficient last-mile connectivity, pedestrian-friendly access and disciplined enforcement against illegal roadside parking elsewhere in the city. Without seamless public transport integration, experts warn that commuters may continue preferring direct bus access into central districts despite congestion. The project also signals Mumbai’s growing emphasis on transit-oriented urban infrastructure as the metropolitan region expands northward. Real estate analysts suggest large mobility nodes often reshape surrounding land use patterns by attracting commercial activity, hospitality services and higher commuter footfall. Environmental planners argue that the project could contribute to more sustainable mobility outcomes if supported by cleaner bus technologies, electric feeder transport and reduced duplication of road-based travel inside the city. At the same time, they stress that transport infrastructure expansion should remain aligned with broader goals of reducing vehicle dependency and improving public transport accessibility across income groups.

For Mumbai’s overstretched western corridor, the Dahisar Transport Hub may become an important test of whether integrated transport planning can simultaneously improve commuter efficiency, reduce emissions and reclaim road space in one of India’s most densely populated urban regions.
