Pune Metro Double Decker Corridors Redefine Mobility

Pune is preparing for a major redesign of its transport infrastructure as Metro Phase 2 proposes nearly 22 kilometres of integrated double-decker corridors across some of the city’s busiest routes. The plan combines elevated metro lines with multi-lane flyovers on shared structures, reflecting a broader shift towards space-efficient urban mobility in one of India’s fastest-growing metropolitan regions.  The proposed expansion comes at a critical moment for Pune, where rising vehicle ownership, rapid real estate growth and expanding suburban development have intensified pressure on existing road infrastructure. Officials involved in the project say the integrated approach is intended to reduce land acquisition requirements while improving both public transport access and traffic movement simultaneously.

Under the Pune Metro expansion blueprint, major stretches including Ramwadi-Wagholi, Vanaz-Chandani Chowk, Kharadi-Khadakwasla and Bhairoba Nala-Akashwani are expected to feature double-decker infrastructure. The corridors will combine six-lane or eight-lane elevated roads with metro viaducts positioned above them, creating vertically integrated transport systems in high-density urban zones. Urban planners say such designs are increasingly becoming necessary in cities where road widening alone can no longer solve congestion challenges. Pune’s eastern growth belt, particularly around Kharadi, Wagholi and Hadapsar, has witnessed accelerated commercial and residential expansion over the last decade, leading to severe peak-hour bottlenecks and longer commute times. The Pune Metro expansion under Phase 2 proposes nearly 55 kilometres of additional viaduct infrastructure. Authorities have also initiated the appointment of an independent proof-checking consultant to verify structural designs and engineering safety standards before large-scale execution begins. The review process will examine foundations, piers, stations, elevated road decks and metro structures to minimise long-term operational risks.

One of the most significant components is expected along the Ramwadi-Wagholi corridor, where a fully integrated double-decker structure is proposed over several kilometres. Other sections may involve collaboration between multiple agencies, including state infrastructure authorities and highway agencies, indicating the increasing complexity of urban transport planning in Pune. Transport experts note that integrated corridors can improve travel efficiency, but their long-term success depends on pedestrian access, multimodal connectivity and disciplined urban planning around stations. Without proper last-mile integration, elevated infrastructure alone may struggle to reduce dependence on private vehicles.

The Pune Metro expansion is also expected to influence real estate patterns across emerging suburban zones. Improved connectivity often drives commercial investment and higher housing demand near transit corridors, particularly in eastern and western growth clusters. However, planners caution that infrastructure-led growth must be accompanied by affordable housing, public spaces and environmental safeguards to prevent unbalanced urbanisation. Officials indicated that final alignments and station locations may still change following consultations with civic authorities and regional planning agencies. The coming months are likely to determine how effectively Pune balances large-scale infrastructure growth with the broader need for sustainable and people-centric mobility systems.
