Mounting concerns over the deteriorating pedestrian pathway connecting Chetpet Eco Park and the nearby suburban railway station have reignited debate around Chennai’s last-mile urban infrastructure and the city’s struggle to maintain safe, inclusive public spaces. The narrow corridor, used daily by commuters, students and local residents, has reportedly become increasingly inaccessible due to poor sanitation, inadequate lighting and unchecked vegetation growth.

The nearly 150-metre stretch functions as a critical non-motorised transit link between the neighbourhood’s public transport network and surrounding residential zones. However, residents say years of inconsistent upkeep have reduced its usability, particularly after sunset, forcing many pedestrians to shift to the adjacent bridge footpath despite longer walking distances.Urban mobility experts note that such neglected pedestrian corridors undermine broader efforts to encourage sustainable transport usage in Chennai. While large-scale investments continue in metro rail, road expansion and transit-oriented development, smaller civic assets such as pavements, feeder walkways and station access routes remain vulnerable to fragmented maintenance responsibilities.

Several local commuters highlighted concerns around visibility and personal safety, especially for women, elderly residents and school and college students using the route during early morning or evening hours. Inadequate illumination and poor surveillance, they say, have contributed to discomfort and reduced pedestrian confidence in the area.Residents also pointed to persistent sanitation issues along the corridor, including waste accumulation and foul odours allegedly linked to misuse of public spaces in the absence of active monitoring and enforcement. Urban planners argue that such conditions are symptomatic of a wider challenge confronting Indian cities: public infrastructure often receives capital investment without parallel long-term maintenance planning.The condition of the Chetpet pedestrian corridor also raises questions around climate-responsive urban design. Overgrown vegetation, blocked edges and unmanaged waste can obstruct drainage movement during monsoon periods, increasing risks of waterlogging and reducing the resilience of neighbourhood mobility infrastructure. Experts say walkable urban environments are essential not only for reducing vehicle dependency but also for improving public health, local commerce and equitable city access.

Civic officials acknowledged operational challenges in maintaining the pathway, citing restricted access for mechanised cleaning equipment due to the narrow width of the stretch. Temporary manual cleaning operations are currently underway while authorities assess alternative maintenance methods for the corridor. The episode has once again drawn attention to the gap between infrastructure creation and sustained urban management in rapidly growing metropolitan regions. As Chennai positions itself as a modern transit-led city, urban development specialists say equal focus will be needed on safe pedestrian access, routine maintenance systems and citizen-centric public realm improvements that support everyday mobility rather than only large transport projects.
