Pune Equal Water Supply Reaches Southern Corridor

After years of irregular supply, tanker dependence and repeated citizen protests, several neighbourhoods in south Pune have begun receiving regular municipal water supply under the city’s equal water distribution programme. The rollout across Mohammadwadi, NIBM Road, Undri and adjoining residential pockets marks a significant shift in civic infrastructure delivery for one of Pune’s fastest-growing urban corridors. The launch of the upgraded supply network was formally marked on Sunday during a public event attended by Maharashtra’s chief minister and senior civic officials. Authorities acknowledged that sustained pressure from residents’ groups and housing societies played a decisive role in accelerating long-pending water infrastructure works in the area.

The Equal Water Supply scheme has emerged as one of Pune’s largest attempts to modernise urban water distribution by reducing leakages, improving accountability in supply systems and ensuring more balanced access across neighbourhoods. Officials stated that older transmission networks had resulted in major water losses over the years, even as rapidly urbanising suburbs continued to struggle with shortages. For residents of Mohammadwadi and Undri, the issue had evolved into both a public health and urban governance concern. Thousands of households in high-density residential zones relied heavily on private tanker operators for daily water needs, significantly increasing household costs while placing additional stress on local roads and traffic conditions.

The crisis intensified in recent months after fatal tanker-related accidents in the area triggered widespread anger among residents and renewed scrutiny over Pune’s uneven infrastructure expansion. Citizen forums, welfare associations and local community groups had repeatedly organised petitions, meetings and protests demanding permanent municipal water access instead of temporary tanker arrangements. Urban development experts say the situation reflects a broader challenge facing Indian cities where residential construction in peri-urban growth corridors often outpaces core civic infrastructure. South Pune, particularly around NIBM, Mohammadwadi and Undri, has witnessed rapid apartment development over the past decade due to rising housing demand and improved regional connectivity. However, infrastructure systems such as water pipelines, sewage networks and transport facilities have struggled to expand at a comparable pace. Officials involved in the project indicated that upgraded overhead storage systems and new distribution infrastructure were completed in phases to improve supply consistency and pressure levels in the affected localities. The initiative also forms part of Pune’s wider strategy to create a more efficient and measurable water management network capable of reducing wastage and improving long-term urban resilience.

Urban planners argue that equitable water access will become increasingly critical as Pune continues expanding outward into newly urbanised zones. Reliable municipal water systems are now viewed not only as a civic necessity but also as a central component of sustainable urbanisation, public health protection and climate resilience planning. While residents have welcomed the start of regular supply, experts caution that maintaining distribution efficiency, limiting leakages and strengthening future demand forecasting will determine whether Pune’s equal water supply model can deliver lasting improvements across the metropolitan region.
