Kochi Highway Repairs Target Safer Kumbalam Travel

Authorities are nearing completion of corrective works along a vulnerable section of National Highway 66 near Kumbalam in Kochi, where uneven bridge approach roads have triggered safety concerns, commuter complaints and repeated traffic disruptions over recent months. The repair initiative is expected to improve driving conditions on one of the city’s busiest transport corridors while highlighting the growing infrastructure maintenance challenges faced by coastal urban regions built on reclaimed land. The ongoing intervention focuses on stabilising and resurfacing approach roads connected to the Kumbalam bridge, a stretch frequently criticised by motorists for sharp elevation differences between the bridge deck and adjoining carriageway. Transport officials said the work is expected to conclude within days, following delays linked to contractor interruptions and traffic management complications.

The issue stems from gradual soil settlement affecting reclaimed low-lying land around Kochi’s waterfront zones. While bridge structures remain secure due to deep foundational piling systems, adjoining road surfaces tend to sink over time under constant traffic load and saturated soil conditions. This creates abrupt level changes at bridge entry and exit points, increasing the risk of vehicle instability, especially for buses and two-wheelers travelling at higher speeds. Urban infrastructure experts note that differential settlement is becoming a recurring concern across several transport corridors in Kerala’s coastal belt, where climate vulnerability, waterlogged terrain and intense monsoon exposure place additional stress on road engineering systems. They argue that maintenance planning in such regions must increasingly account for long-term land subsidence and hydrological impacts rather than relying solely on periodic resurfacing. The NH66 Kumbalam repairs gained urgency after a recent road accident reportedly caused injuries to a passenger travelling through the uneven section. Following safety concerns, authorities accelerated rectification work involving removal of damaged asphalt layers and elevation adjustments across both sides of the bridge approaches.

Engineers associated with the project said the repairs involve raising approximately 60 metres of road surface to create a smoother transition between the bridge structure and adjoining highway carriageway. One side of the corridor has largely completed elevation work and final tarring remains pending, while resurfacing on the opposite side began recently under an accelerated schedule. However, execution of the NH66 Kumbalam repairs also exposed gaps in coordination between contractors and traffic management agencies. Construction activity carried out during daytime hours caused severe congestion extending towards nearby intersections, affecting commuters and freight movement during evening peak periods.

Traffic authorities have since directed contractors to restrict major operations to off-peak and nighttime windows to minimise disruption on the strategic highway corridor connecting Kochi with southern districts. Urban mobility specialists say such coordination is becoming increasingly important as Indian cities attempt to upgrade ageing infrastructure while maintaining uninterrupted traffic movement. The NH66 Kumbalam repairs are expected to provide immediate relief for thousands of daily commuters navigating the corridor. Yet urban planners caution that Kochi’s expanding transport network will require more climate-resilient engineering practices and proactive maintenance systems to ensure long-term mobility safety in a city shaped by fragile coastal geography and rapid urban growth.
