Thane Borivali Tunnel Work Begins Beneath National Park

Construction activity has intensified on the long-planned underground tunnel linking Thane and Borivali, with authorities initiating a major execution phase near Ghodbunder Road in Thane and simultaneously enforcing year-long traffic diversions across the corridor. The project, considered one of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region’s most ambitious urban mobility interventions, is expected to reduce travel time between the eastern and western suburbs while easing chronic congestion on one of the region’s busiest transport routes. The latest construction works are concentrated around the Mullabag stretch of Ghodbunder Road, where engineering teams have begun preparatory and structural operations connected to the underground alignment. Traffic authorities have imposed continuous diversions in the area from May 2026 through May 2027 to facilitate uninterrupted work and ensure commuter safety around the construction zone.

The Thane Borivali Tunnel project has emerged as a critical component of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region’s broader infrastructure expansion strategy. Urban planners say the corridor addresses a long-standing mobility imbalance between Thane and Mumbai’s western suburbs, where commuters currently depend on heavily congested arterial roads skirting the Sanjay Gandhi National Park. Once operational, the underground corridor is expected to create a faster east-west connection beneath the protected forest landscape, significantly reducing travel durations for daily commuters, freight movement and intercity traffic heading towards Gujarat, Mira-Bhayander, Vasai-Virar and Mumbai’s northern suburbs. Transport experts note that Ghodbunder Road has increasingly struggled to accommodate rising traffic volumes generated by rapid residential and commercial growth across Thane and peripheral urban clusters. Narrow stretches near the ghat section, combined with mixed traffic movement involving heavy commercial vehicles, have led to severe bottlenecks and unpredictable travel times over the past decade.

According to traffic management plans issued for the current construction phase, vehicle movement between residential pockets near Hillcrest Housing Society and Neelkanth Greens has been restricted at select junctions, with motorists being redirected through temporary alternate routes. Officials indicated that the diversions will remain operational round the clock for the next 12 months. Infrastructure analysts say underground tunnelling beneath environmentally sensitive zones such as the Sanjay Gandhi National Park reflects a shift towards minimising surface disruption in dense metropolitan regions. However, experts also caution that large-scale tunnelling projects require sustained environmental monitoring, groundwater management and careful ecological safeguards during execution. The Thane Borivali Tunnel project is also expected to influence future real estate and economic activity across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region by improving accessibility between employment hubs and expanding residential corridors. Improved cross-city connectivity could reduce pressure on overstretched transport systems while supporting more balanced urban growth patterns.

For now, commuters along Ghodbunder Road face a prolonged adjustment period as construction advances. Authorities are expected to continue phased traffic management measures over the coming months as excavation and structural works progress deeper into the corridor.
