Uber is preparing a major expansion of its technology and engineering footprint in India with new large-scale campuses planned in Bengaluru and Hyderabad, a move that could intensify pressure on urban infrastructure while reinforcing the growing role of Indian cities in global digital operations.

The mobility and technology company said the two new centres are expected to become operational by 2027 and together accommodate nearly 9,600 employees. The Bengaluru facility is planned along the city’s Outer Ring Road technology corridor, while the Hyderabad campus will come up in Nanakramguda, one of the fastest-growing commercial districts in western Hyderabad. Industry analysts say the expansion reflects a broader shift in how multinational technology companies are viewing Indian cities — not merely as outsourcing destinations, but as strategic hubs for product development, engineering, and global operations. The proposed campuses are expected to support work linked to artificial intelligence, enterprise systems, mobility platforms, and automation technologies. For Hyderabad and Bengaluru, however, the announcement also revives questions around sustainable urban growth and infrastructure readiness. Both cities continue to face mounting traffic congestion, rising commercial land demand, strained public transport systems, and growing pressure on housing affordability near technology districts.Urban planners note that large office developments often trigger rapid real estate appreciation in surrounding areas, reshaping land use patterns and increasing commuter dependency. In Hyderabad, Nanakramguda and the wider Financial District have already witnessed accelerated commercial construction over the past decade, accompanied by increasing vehicle density and infrastructure stress during peak hours.

The expansion also comes amid intensifying competition among Indian cities to attract global capability centres and engineering operations. Hyderabad and Bengaluru have emerged as preferred destinations due to their technology talent pools, airport connectivity, and existing digital infrastructure. Experts say such investments can generate long-term employment opportunities, but their economic benefits depend heavily on whether cities simultaneously invest in inclusive transport systems, affordable housing, and climate-resilient civic infrastructure. Recent discussions between Uber executives and Telangana government officials also touched on urban mobility challenges, including parking shortages and electric vehicle infrastructure integration. State officials reportedly encouraged the company to examine multi-level parking systems and future mobility solutions as Hyderabad expands towards new urban development corridors. The planned expansion follows Uber’s announcement of its first India-based data centre and signals a broader localisation strategy for digital infrastructure and engineering operations in the country. Analysts say India’s growing importance in global technology networks is likely to accelerate demand for large office campuses, data infrastructure, and mixed-use urban districts over the next decade. Yet urban economists caution that rapid technology-led expansion must be balanced with stronger public infrastructure planning. Without integrated transit systems, improved walkability, and climate-responsive commercial design, large-scale office growth risks deepening existing inequalities between high-growth business zones and underserved urban communities.
