Pune Highway Development Advances Strategic Transport Network

A major highway expansion project connecting Pune and Shirur has moved into the execution phase following the award of a nearly ₹3,931 crore construction contract for a six-lane corridor on National Highway 753F. The infrastructure project is expected to strengthen regional mobility, improve freight movement and support long-term economic activity across one of Maharashtra’s rapidly urbanising transport corridors. Infrastructure developer HG Infra Engineering has secured the contract from Welspun Enterprises for the development of the Pune–Shirur section of NH-753F. The project includes partially elevated stretches and upgrades to existing roadway infrastructure across a corridor spanning more than 53 kilometres.

Transport planners say the Pune Shirur highway corridor is strategically significant because it links expanding industrial zones, logistics hubs and residential growth centres in eastern Pune district. The route also supports commercial traffic movement towards manufacturing clusters and regional freight networks across Maharashtra. Urban infrastructure analysts note that large-scale highway projects are increasingly shaping development patterns in peri-urban regions surrounding Pune, where industrial expansion and real estate growth are accelerating simultaneously. Improved road connectivity often stimulates warehousing activity, commercial investment and suburban residential construction along emerging transport corridors.

Infrastructure experts say partially elevated highway sections are generally designed to improve traffic flow in dense or conflict-prone stretches while minimising disruptions caused by intersections and local access points. However, they caution that such projects require careful execution planning due to engineering complexity, land acquisition challenges and rising construction costs. Environmental planners also stress that future transport infrastructure expansion must balance mobility improvements with sustainable urban development objectives. Highway widening alone may not permanently solve congestion unless integrated with public transport systems, land-use planning and climate-responsive mobility strategies.
