Hyderabad Drinking Water Security Depends On Reservoir Levels

The Krishna River Management Board (KRMB) has approved the release of 31 TMC ft of water from the Srisailam and Nagarjuna Sagar reservoirs to meet drinking water requirements in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh until August 15, underscoring growing concerns over urban water security and interstate resource management during peak summer months.

Under the latest allocation, Telangana will receive a combined share from both reservoirs to support drinking water supply for Hyderabad and several drought-prone districts, while Andhra Pradesh has been permitted to draw water from Nagarjuna Sagar for immediate civic needs. The decision was taken during a meeting of the KRMB’s three-member committee comprising senior irrigation officials from both states and the Board. The allocation highlights increasing pressure on the Krishna river system as expanding cities, agricultural demand and climate variability continue to strain southern India’s shared water infrastructure. Hyderabad, which depends significantly on Krishna basin reservoirs for drinking water, has witnessed rising demand due to rapid population growth, peripheral urban expansion and industrial development across western and northern corridors.Officials from Telangana reportedly expressed concerns during the meeting over Andhra Pradesh’s utilisation levels, arguing that additional releases could affect long-term water availability during the ongoing summer season. Despite these objections, the committee proceeded with allocations for both states while assuring Telangana access to drawable water from Srisailam and additional reserves from Nagarjuna Sagar. Urban water experts say the recurring disputes surrounding Krishna river allocations reveal the growing fragility of large reservoir-dependent supply systems in rapidly urbanising regions.

Hyderabad’s dependence on distant surface-water sources has steadily increased as local lakes, wetlands and groundwater recharge zones have declined due to construction activity and changing land-use patterns.Environmental planners warn that climate variability is likely to intensify interstate water conflicts across peninsular India in the coming years. Irregular monsoon patterns, prolonged dry spells and rising urban consumption are already reducing the predictability of reservoir management, particularly in river basins shared by multiple states. The Krishna River Management Board was constituted under the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act to regulate and manage water-sharing between Telangana and Andhra Pradesh after state bifurcation. However, operational disputes and disagreements over project jurisdiction have continued to shape water governance debates over the past decade. Water policy researchers argue that cities like Hyderabad must increasingly diversify their water strategies instead of depending almost entirely on large inter-state reservoir systems. They advocate stronger investment in wastewater recycling, rainwater harvesting, urban lake restoration and decentralised water management to improve long-term resilience. The latest KRMB allocation also reflects the wider urban challenge facing Indian metropolitan regions where infrastructure growth and rising population densities are placing unprecedented stress on finite water resources. As Hyderabad expands further into surrounding districts, demand for reliable drinking water is expected to rise sharply over the next decade.

For policymakers and urban planners, the summer allocation serves as a reminder that water security is no longer only a rural or irrigation issue but a defining urban governance challenge linked directly to climate resilience, public health and future economic growth. The ability of cities to secure sustainable and equitable water access may increasingly determine their long-term liveability and infrastructure stability.
