Kolkata: A major equipment modernisation plan at the container terminal operated by a private port logistics group in Kolkata is set to strengthen cargo movement efficiency along eastern India’s trade corridor, while also signalling a broader shift towards lower-emission and technology-driven port infrastructure.
The terminal, located within the dock system serving the Kolkata metropolitan region, is expected to receive a new fleet of ship-to-shore and rubber-tyred gantry cranes as part of an expansion programme aimed at improving container handling speed and operational capacity. Industry observers say the move reflects growing pressure on Indian ports to manage larger cargo volumes while reducing turnaround time and urban freight congestion.The development comes at a critical stage for Kolkata’s logistics economy. As manufacturing, e-commerce and regional trade activity increase across eastern and north-eastern India, port-linked infrastructure is facing mounting demands for faster multimodal connectivity.
