Chennai Road Congestion Raises Civic Safety Concerns

A key road connecting residential and industrial neighbourhoods near Ennore in north Chennai has become a persistent congestion hotspot, exposing long-standing gaps in local transport planning and last-mile civic infrastructure. The mounting traffic pressure around the Ennore bus terminus is now affecting commuter mobility, public health, and freight movement in one of the city’s strategically important industrial corridors.

Kathivakkam High School Road, a narrow two-lane stretch serving buses, cargo vehicles, two-wheelers and local residents, has witnessed severe traffic build-up during peak hours for several months, according to people living in the area. Residents and daily commuters say the road geometry, unregulated roadside activity and incomplete carriageway improvements are worsening delays and creating unsafe travel conditions. The corridor functions as a critical connector between Ennore, Ernavoor, Nettukuppam and adjoining industrial zones that support logistics, manufacturing and port-linked movement. Urban planners note that traffic congestion in such areas carries broader economic implications because delays in worker mobility and cargo access can affect industrial productivity and increase fuel consumption.

Field observations by local civic groups indicate that several sections near the bus terminus remain either partially unpaved or insufficiently widened, despite increasing transport demand in the northern suburbs. Tight turning points and limited manoeuvring space for buses often result in prolonged standstills, particularly during morning and evening commuting windows. The issue also highlights a growing urban inequality challenge in Chennai’s peripheral neighbourhoods. While large-scale mobility investments continue across the metropolitan region, including metro rail expansion and elevated corridor projects, several densely populated working-class areas remain dependent on ageing surface roads with limited pedestrian infrastructure and poor traffic management systems.

Transport experts say recurring traffic congestion in industrial-residential mixed zones often contributes to higher vehicular emissions, increased exposure to roadside pollution and reduced emergency response efficiency. In Ennore, where environmental concerns linked to industrial activity and air quality already persist, prolonged vehicle idling is adding to local sustainability pressures. Officials familiar with the matter said civic authorities had previously undertaken limited encroachment clearance near the terminus during renovation activity earlier this year. However, proposed road widening measures were reportedly deferred due to planning and execution constraints. Authorities are now evaluating whether a fresh tender process could be initiated for widening and surface upgrades in the coming months.

Urban mobility analysts argue that Chennai’s northern growth belt requires integrated transport planning rather than isolated road interventions. They say junction redesign, dedicated bus movement zones, pedestrian-safe corridors and coordinated land-use regulation will be essential to prevent future traffic congestion from escalating as industrial and residential density increases. For residents navigating the Ennore corridor every day, the immediate expectation remains straightforward: safer roads, predictable travel times and infrastructure upgrades that match the pace of urban expansion.
