A key road connecting residential and industrial neighbourhoods near Ennore in north Chennai has become a persistent congestion hotspot, exposing long-standing gaps in local transport planning and last-mile civic infrastructure. The mounting traffic pressure around the Ennore bus terminus is now affecting commuter mobility, public health, and freight movement in one of the city’s strategically important industrial corridors.

Kathivakkam High School Road, a narrow two-lane stretch serving buses, cargo vehicles, two-wheelers and local residents, has witnessed severe traffic build-up during peak hours for several months, according to people living in the area. Residents and daily commuters say the road geometry, unregulated roadside activity and incomplete carriageway improvements are worsening delays and creating unsafe travel conditions. The corridor functions as a critical connector between Ennore, Ernavoor, Nettukuppam and adjoining industrial zones that support logistics, manufacturing and port-linked movement. Transport experts say recurring traffic congestion in industrial-residential mixed zones often contributes to higher vehicular emissions, increased exposure to roadside pollution and reduced emergency response efficiency. In Ennore, where environmental concerns linked to industrial activity and air quality already persist, prolonged vehicle idling is adding to local sustainability pressures. Officials familiar with the matter said civic authorities had previously undertaken limited encroachment clearance near the terminus during renovation activity earlier this year. Authorities are now evaluating whether a fresh tender process could be initiated for widening and surface upgrades in the coming months.
