108 Ambulance Team Delivers Baby on Gujarat Highway Bus

108 ambulance service team assisting a mother and newborn beside a highway bus in Gujarat

A 108 ambulance team delivered a baby inside a bus travelling from Ahmedabad to Dahod after a pregnant passenger went into labour near Kathlal on the Ahmedabad–Indore highway, according to a report by Sandesh. The mother and newborn were later shifted to Kathlal Community Health Centre for further medical care.

The incident occurred at about 10.30 pm while the bus was near Gadvel, close to the Rajwadi Tea Centre. The woman reportedly developed severe labour pain during the journey, causing concern among passengers and prompting the bus driver and conductor to seek emergency assistance.

The crew contacted the 108 emergency ambulance service, following which the team stationed in the Kathlal area reached the location within minutes, the report said. Emergency Medical Technician Kesarisinh Zala and pilot Mahendrasinh Solanki arrived with the ambulance equipment and attended to the woman inside the bus.

The delivery was completed at the scene. The 108 team then provided initial treatment to both the mother and the newborn, with telephone guidance from an ERCP doctor, according to the report. The mother and infant were subsequently transported by ambulance to the Kathlal Community Health Centre for more intensive medical attention.

The episode highlights the operational role of emergency ambulance services beyond conventional road accidents and hospital transfers. For passengers travelling between cities and towns, a medical emergency can unfold far from a hospital, making the speed of dispatch, the location of the responding crew and the availability of basic equipment critical to the immediate response.

In this case, the bus staff’s decision to stop the vehicle and contact the emergency service created the first link in the response chain. The 108 team then provided care in a constrained setting inside the bus before transferring the mother and child to a public health facility. The report did not provide further details about the mother’s identity, the baby’s condition after admission or the distance between the incident location and the health centre.

Sandesh reported that family members and local citizens praised the 108 team’s prompt response. The account also places attention on the importance of coordinated emergency care along highways, where travellers may need assistance before reaching a hospital. The mother and newborn were taken to Kathlal Community Health Centre for continued treatment after receiving initial care at the roadside.
